Grinding, rattling, banging or squeaking — a noisy garage door is usually your door telling you something needs attention. Here is what those sounds mean and how to fix them.

A garage door is one of the largest moving parts of your home, and a little sound during operation is normal. But a door that suddenly becomes loud — grinding, banging, rattling or screeching — is almost always a sign of wear or a part that needs service. Catching it early keeps a cheap fix from turning into an expensive repair. Here are the most common reasons a garage door gets noisy and what to do about each one.
The rollers guide your door along the tracks. Old steel rollers with worn bearings grind and rattle as the door moves. Upgrading to nylon rollers dramatically quiets a door and is one of the most effective noise fixes.
All that up-and-down movement gradually shakes bolts, nuts and hinges loose, causing rattling and vibration. Tightening the hardware with a socket wrench often solves the problem — just be careful never to touch the bottom roller brackets or spring hardware, which are under high tension.
Squeaking and screeching usually mean metal is rubbing metal. Applying a garage-door-specific lubricant (not WD-40) to the rollers, hinges, springs and bearings every few months keeps everything running quietly. Wipe the tracks clean, but do not grease them.
Springs do the heavy lifting. A worn spring can groan or pop, and a sudden loud bang almost always means a spring has snapped. Springs are under extreme tension — do not attempt to operate or repair the door yourself. Read our guide on what to do when a spring breaks and call a professional.
A slapping or clanking sound often comes from a loose opener chain, while a grinding motor may signal a failing opener. A properly tensioned chain (or a quieter belt-drive opener) makes a big difference, especially for bedrooms above or beside the garage.
If your door is off-balance, the opener strains and every component wears faster and louder. Disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway by hand — a balanced door stays put. If it slams down or flies up, the spring tension needs professional adjustment.
Tightening bolts and lubricating parts are safe DIY steps. But grinding openers, unbalanced doors and anything involving the springs or cables should be handled by a technician.
